BRITTONS NECK

Britton's Neck is a historic, unincorporated community in southern Marion County, South Carolina. Tucked between the Great and Little Pee Dee rivers, it was established around 1735 by the Britton brothers and served as a tactical Revolutionary War area and early river ferry site. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

  • Position: Located in southern Marion County along SC-908, positioned north of US-378 and south of Centenary.

  • Early Settlers: Named after six English colonial brothers (Francis Jr., Timothy, Daniel, Moses, Joseph, and Philip Britton) who settled the neck in 1735. [1, 2]

  • Freedom Land Community Forest: A 305-acre historic local site—formerly the Woodberry Slave Plantation and ancestral Pee Dee Indian land—was transitioned into a protected, community-managed public forest and conservation area
